Boys' Junior Cricket Makes Rene Gordon Proud at North TDESAA Cricket Tournament
May 28, 2015
It was an absolutely perfect day for cricket at the North TDESAA Grade 5 Cricket Tournament hosted by Vradenburg Public School. The boys exhibited determination, and sportsmanship throughout the four tough games they played throughout the day. Overall, Rene Gordon finished with a 2-2 record, losing a game to Thorncliffe by a very close margin of 69-73. Vradenburg's Grade 5 team ended up winning a well deserved championship banner as they went undefeated (4-0), exhibiting excellent fielding, bowling and striking throughout the day. Congratulations Vradenburg!
The boys remained upbeat and positive despite the defeats. For some of the boys, this was especially difficult as the day prior, they had played an all-day soccer tournament that resulted in a heart-breaking loss in the final game that left them out of the tournament. I am extremely proud of the way all the athletes played, sticking together as a team and lifting each other up when faced with adversity.
Next up is the Girls' Cricket Tournament on June 15 @ Vradenburg. I know the boys will be cheering hard for the girls to do well!
Thank you to all the volunteers and coaches that helped out with the preparations and practices. Also, thank you to Cricket Canada for the resources and support throughout the last few months!

Boys' Volleyball team plays at Cassandra Tournament
The following report was written by volleyball team members Ashraf and Shamar
When the Boys Volleyball team got to Cassandra Public School for the tournament, we were given a room to stay in for the day. The Principal told us that they were ready to start. In our first game we played against Fenside. The starters were Shamar, Shajih, Sulaiman, Omar, Justin and Achraf. We did really well for our first game, we won the first set! They won the second set, making it a tie game. Our next game was against Cassandra and despite some good rallies we lost both sets. Our final game was against Thorncliffe. We were sad to see it end, we had a lot of fun. We were all proud that we could do so well for our first tournament."

The recipes for both snacks will be posted to this site shortly.
We look forward to our next session on Thursday, November 20.

CTV News and Citytv Visit Rene Gordon to Learn About How Integrated Yoga Instruction Helps Promote Mental Health and Well-being
Ontario schools mark the first week of May as Children's Mental Health Week. The week is about building awareness around children's mental health issues, decreasing the stigma associated with mental illness and promoting the many resources available to help students and parents. To kick start Children's Mental Health Week, the local Toronto media was invited to our school to watch a yoga session for the grade 1/2 class instructed by Ms. Soloman. CTV reporter Pauline Chan interviewed Ms. Soloman to find out more about the connection with yoga and mental health. Ms. Chan also spent time with grade 2 student Julia Triglebova. Julia did an exceptional job instructing Ms. Chan on how to perform a variety of yoga poses and breathing exercises. Great job Ms. Soloman, Julia and Ms. Soloman's grade 1/2 class!
The media also visited Ms. Armstrong's grade 2/3 class to watch as students participated in a board wide "Take 10 Stress Free Minutes and Drop Everything and Relax" session produced by HPE specialist teacher Beth Ritchie and her students from Sloane Public School. The video students followed for this relaxation exercise along with additional information about mental health can be found at: http://www.tdsb.on.ca/ElementarySchool/SupportingYou/MentalHealthStrategy.aspx

The event was kicked-off with a special assembly and then students left the assembly to work with their new "country" teams. In their teams, students learned more about the countries they were representing through smart-board and iPad technology. They then worked on making their own country flags as well as a Canadian flag. Day 2 of our Olympic celebration will be held next week and should be another exciting event to look forward to!
