Winter Skating Program
Thanks to a partnership with Canadian Tire's Jump Start Program, Rene Gordon has established a Learn to Skate Program run during the winter months. The school now has roughly 100 skates and helmets of various sizes to accommodate all students. Thank you to Mr. Little for the hard work in organizing and running this popular new program!
Fitness Fridays with the Junior Right to Play Leaders
In warmer weather, our Junior Right to Play Leaders have helped to establish a Friday tradition of fun fitness and active activities during our last recess. Students participate in a wide range of activities, including skip rope, basketball and soccer and are aided by our Right to Play Leaders. A little musical motivation helps keep spirits high as well.
Walking School Bus
What do you have when you combine healthy exercise with hands-on street proofing lessons and reduced air pollution emissions? A WALKING SCHOOL BUS!
A Walking School Bus is a group of students walking to school under the supervision of adult volunteers and parents. At Rene Gordon, we started our own Walking School Bus on January 15, 2014. The Walking School Bus runs every Wednesday.

Rene Gordon Kilometer Club
The Rene Gordon Kilometer Club runs during the Fall and Spring months of the school year. Students belonging to the club run during designated times together and track their overall distance. The goal is to run a total distance equivalent to running across Canada by the end of the year. It's a great way to get physical activity and there are lots of learning opportunities connected to mathematics and geography. Thank you to Mr. Atkinson, Ms. MacLean and Ms. Yamamoto-Smith for administering and supervising this club
Swim To Survive Program
All grade 3s, 4s and 5s took part in a 3 part series of swimming lessons at George S. Henry Academy. Students were taught the basic swimming survival skills, including treading water, learning various jumps into water, and swimming various distances with or without the aid of life jackets. Thank you to Mr. Little for his tireless effort in bringing this important life saving program to Rene Gordon!
House League Program
Rene Gordon has a lunch hour House League Program that runs at various times throughout the year thanks to teacher volunteers and student leaders.
In the fall session, students in grades 4 and 5 participated in a Bordenball league. The whole school came out to watch the FINALS on November 13, 2014. The Maple Leafs and the Senators played a competitive game and gave the spectators plenty of thrills. The Maple Leafs ended up winning the game, but the Senators put up a fight until the end!
Stay tuned for news on upcoming House League programs throughout the year.

Bullying Awareness
Students participated in a variety of bullying awareness activities throughout the week of November 18-22. Students learned strategies to deal with bullies and the whole school made a pledge to "stomp out bullying"
The week ended with the production of a school-wide photo of a human peace sign, which symbolizes our school's commitment to stop bullying.
